The light

EXT. OUTSIDE – SCHOOL GROUNDS – EARLY EVENING

The sun is starting to go down, casting a deepening yellow over the courtyard. A bird finishes nibbling at litter on the ground then flies away. The teacher walks to his classroom, unlocks the door and enters the room. He turns on the light and stands there for a moment as the door shuts behind him. The ceiling light at the back of the classroom does its usual on and off flickering. Flinging his backpack on one of the student’s desks, the man puts his hands in his pockets, looks around, observes the classroom for any clues or answers for what happened that day. As he slowly takes a few steps and starts to focus in on a certain desk, he hears a light tap on the window. Mr. Jackson, a tall man in his seventies smiles and he lets him in the room.

MR JACKSON

Just checkin’ on ya David. I don’t think I’ve seen you here this late before.

DAVID quickly glances at then away from the desk he noticed.

DAVID

Yeah, I don’t want to make it a habit. After today, I may have to look for something less stressful.

MR JACKSON

Well, I don’t want to bother you none. Just wanted to make sure you still have your head on after today, don’t want you to

lose your footing.

DAVID

No, I’m okay, thanks Jim. I’m about ready to go.

He grabs his backpack as they walk to the door, and he flips the light switches. The ceiling light at the back of the room

flickers but eventually turns off. He closes the door, then begins to turn the knob to make sure it is locked, but the turn

suddenly stops. Caught off guard, he twists the knob again with more force and it gives way.

MR JACKSON

Hey, you want to play a game?

DAVID looks at Mr. Jackson a little awkwardly, not quite knowing what to say. They walk out of view together to the parking lot as Mr Jackson tells David a funny story about one of the students that day. We stay focused on the classroom.
